The Story of George Washington's vision  at Valley Forge after many years of obscurity, appeared in a publication called the Wolf Lodge Journal back in 1994  and was later published in my book Days of Destiny in 1998  It seems to be surfacing again and I have relieved a lot of E-mails about it ...So here it is folks.

    The last time I ever saw Anthony Sherman was on July 4, 1859, in Independence Square. He was then 99 years old, and becoming very feeble. But though so old, his dimming eyes rekindled as he gazed upon Independence Hall, which he came to visit once more.

    “Let us go into the hall,” he said. “I want to tell you an incident of Washington’s life - one which no one alive knows of except myself; and, if you live, you will before long, see it verified.

    “From the opening of the Revolution we experienced all phases of fortune, now good and now ill; one time victorious and another conquered. The darkest period we had, I think, was when Washington, after several reverses, retreated to Valley Forge, where he resolved to spend the winter of 1777. Ah! I have often seen our dear commander’s care-worn cheeks, as he would be conversing with a confidential officer about the condition of his poor soldiers. You have doubtless heard the story of Washington’s going to the thicket to pray. Well, it was not only true, but he used often to pray in secret for aid and comfort from God, the interposition of whose Divine Providence brought us safely through the darkest days of tribulation.

George Washington's Vision for America

 Many consider George Washington the greatest American who ever lived.  He was a brilliant, educated, successful and a wealthy man who risked everything for the freedom of our country.

Once the revolutionary War began, he was chosen to be the Commander-In-Chief of the Colonial forces.  His was the task of taking a few thousand untrained volunteers and leading them against the armies of the world's greatest empire at that time, Great Britain. 

This was an empire boasting that the sun never set upon her flag.  Added to this was the fact, which many do not know, that our small country of only three million people was seriously divided as to whether or not to fight for freedom.  Less than half of the Colonists supported the cause for freedom and many of those who opposed constantly gave help, comfort and support to the enemy.

Washington's army was so greatly outnumbered and so ill equipped that many thought him foolhardy to even attempt to effectively fight for freedom against the most powerful nation in the world.  Seldom in all of history had such a task been undertaken under such unfavorable conditions. Patrick Henry, in his famous "Give me Liberty of Give Me Death" speech, hit directory upon his reasons for hoping for future victory when he said, "God will raise up friends to fight our battles for us."

Washington led the men with compassion, courage and a fortitude that could only come from total dedication.  When the Continental Congress did not send the funds for the soldier's supples and salaries, he paid for them out of his own pocket.  He was know as fair, firm, resolute, a dedicated gentleman and a devoutly Christian man.  He made no apology for prayer and calling on God for deliverance and for victory in the struggle for freedom. The paintings of George Washington kneeling in prayer  in the snow-covered woods of valley Forge picture an actuality. He believed God would lead him to victory and anyone who has read any of his hundreds of handwritten letters and documents cannot help but to be impressed by his reliance upon and deep belief in Diving Guidance.  He was a man who had numerous unusual Spiritual experiences.

With this as a backdrop to the man who lead us to victory, became the father of our Country and was unanimously acclaimed as our first President it is indeed little wonder that he was shown great favor by God.  As Daniel of old was shown the destiny of the planet Earth, so was Washington shown the destiny of our country.  He told of the event within hours after it took place.  He told it many time to many people during the 22 years he lived after its occurrence.  It was carried in print at the time and has come down to us today as has our Declaration of Independence and other important documents.  However, since spiritual experiences tend to be ignored by secular historians, it remained, at times, in obscurity.  Somehow, they forgot to ignore the Spirit which made it all possible, as a person might look at his watch and not realize it is the unseen main-spring that causes it to function.  Thomas Jefferson best summed up the divine element when he wrote, "God, who gave us life, gave us liberty."

The various accounts of this prophecy all agree in content; there are minor variations only in the circumstances under which George Washington told various individuals through the years after it happened.

The setting was valley Forge in the winter of 1777, where George Washington was quartering his troops.  Their situation was desperate and food was scarce.  There was great agitation in the colonies against our continued effort to secure our freedom from England.  The Continental Congress was not sending adequate supplies, many of the troops did not even have shoes to wear in the deep snow.  Many were diseased and many died.  Morale at valley Forge was at an all-time low.  George Washington was in a desperate situation but determined to see the struggle through..

This is the account of what happened as he told it shortly after the event took place.  These are the words of Washington himself.

Washington: 

"I was sitting at a table in my winter quarters at Valley Forge preparing a dispatch when something seemed to disturb me.  Looking up, I beheld standing opposite me a singularly beautiful female.  So astonished was I, for I had given strict orders not to be disturbed that it was some moments before I found language to inquire into the cause of her presence.  A second, a third and even a fourth time did I repeat my question, but received no answer from my mysterious visitor except a slight raising of her eyes.  By this time I felt strange sensations spreading through me. I would have risen but the rivetted gaze of the being before me rendered volition impossible. I assayed once more to address her, but my tongue had become useless.  Even it had become paralysed. A new influence, mysterious, potent, irresistible took possession of me.  All that I could do was to gauze steadily, vacantly at my unknown visitant.  Gradually, the surrounding atmosphere seemed as though becoming filled with sensations, and luminous.  Everything about me seemed to rarify, the mysterious visitor herself becoming more airy and yet more distinct to my sight than before.  I now began to feel as one dying, or rather to experience the sensations which I have sometimes imagined accompanied dissolution.  I did not think.  I did not reason.  I did not move, all were alike impossible.  I was only conscious of gazing fixedly, vacantly at my companion.

Presently I heard a voice saying ' Son of the Republic, look and learn' while at the same time my visitor extended her arm eastwardly.  I now beheld a heavy white vapor at some distance rising fold upon fold.  This gradually dissipated, and I looked upon a strange scene.  Before me lay spread out over one vast plane all the countries of the world - Europe, Asia, Africa and America.  I saw rolling and tossing between Europe and America the billows of the Atlantic, and between Asia and America lay the Pacific.  'Son of the Republic,' said the same mysterious voice as before, 'look and learn.'  At that moment I beheld a dark, shadowy being, like an angel, standing, or rather floating in mid-air between Europe and America: dipping water out of the ocean in the hollow of each hand.  He sprinkled some upon America with his right hand, while his left hand he cast some on Europe.  Immediately a cloud raised from these countries and joined in mid-ocean.  For a while it remained stationary and then moved slowly westward, until it enveloped America in its murky folds.  Sharp flashes of lightning gleamed through it at intervals and I heard the smothered groans and cries of the  American people.  A second time the angel dipped water from the ocean and sprinkled it out as before.  The dark cloud was then drawn back to the ocean, in whose heaving billows it sank from view.  A third time I heard the mysterious voice saying, 'Son of the Republic, look and learn.'  I cast my eyes upon America and behold villages and towns and cities springing up one after another until the whole land from the Atlantic to the Pacific was dotted with them.  Again I heard the mysterious voice say 'Son of the Republic, the end of the century cometh, look and learn.'

"At this the dark and shadowy angel turned his face southward, and from Africa, I saw an ill-omened spectre approach our land.  It flitted slowly over each town and city of the latter.  The inhabitants presently set themselves in battle against each other.  As I continued looking I saw a bright angel, on whose brow rested a crown of light, on which was traced the word "Union," bearing the American flag which he placed between the divided nation, and said, 'Remember ye are brethren.'  Instantly, the inhabitants, casting from them their weapons became friends once more and united around the National Standard.

"And again I heard the mysterious voice saying, "Son of the Republic, look and learn.'  At this the dark angel placed a trumpet to his mouth and blew three distinct blasts; and taking water from the ocean, he sprinkled it upon Europe, Asia and Africa.  Then my eyes beheld a fearful scene: from each of these countries arose thick, black clouds that were soon joined into one.  And throughout this mass there gleamed a dark red light by which I saw hordes of armed men, who, moving with the cloud, marched by land and sailed by sea to America, which country was enveloped in the volume of cloud.  And I dimly saw those vast armies devastate the whole country and burn villages, towns and cities that I beheld springing up.  My ears listened to the thundering of the cannon, clashing of swords and the shouts and cries of millions in mortal combat as her defenders were driven inland into a wedge-shaped pattern.  I heard again the mysterious voice saying, "Son of the Republic, look and learn.'  When the voice ceased, the dark shadow angel placed his trumpet once more to his mouth, and blew a long fearful blast.

"Instantly a light as of a thousand suns shone down from above me and pierced and broke into fragments the dark cloud which enveloped America.  At the same moment, the same angel whose head still shown the word "Union" and who bore our national flag in one hand and a sword in the other, descended from the  heavens attended by legions of white spirits.  These immediately joined the inhabitants of America, who I perceived were well-nigh overcome, but who immediately, taking courage again, closed up their broken ranks and renewed the battle.  Again, amid the fearful noise of the conflict, I heard the mysterious voice saying, 'Son of the Republic, look and learn.'  As the voice ceased, the shadowy angel for the last time dipped water from ocean  and sprinkled it upon America.  Instantly the dark cloud rolled back, together with the armies it had brought, leaving the inhabitants of the land victorious.

"Then once more I beheld the villages, towns and cities springing up where I had seen them before, while the bright angel, planting the azure standard he had brought in the midst of them, cried with a loud voice, 'While the stars remain and the heavens send down dew upon the earth, so long shall the Union last.'  And taking from his brow the crown which was blazoned the word "Union," he placed it upon the Standard while the people kneeling down said "Amen."

"The scene instantly began to fade and dissolve and I at last saw nothing but the rising, curling vapor I at first beheld.  This also disappearing, I found myself once more gazing upon the mysterious visitor, who, in the same voice I had heard before, said, 'Son of the Republic, what you have seen is thus interpreted: Three great perils will come upon the Republic.  The most fearful is the third passing which the whole world united shall not prevail against her.  Let every child of the republic learn to live for God, his land and Union.'  With these words the vision vanished and I started from my seat and felt that I had seen a vision wherein had been shown to me the birth, progress and destiny of the United States."

   

Editorial commentary-  

    It appears the first peril was the founding of our country, having to fight the strongest nation on earth for our freedom.  The second peril, the Civil War, is probably the most clear reference.  The third peril, yet to come, is referred to as "a dark red light" and is probably a reference to Communism but not  the Communism we often think of.  This "dark red light" and "dark angel" represents One World Government or euphemistically called the "New World Order" whose desire is sovereignty over all nations and peoples.

    The reference to a "light as of a thousand suns" and "legions of white spirits" are clear references to God and the hosts of heaven returning to defeat the anti-God forces. As well an affirmation that "God" has always been in the vision of America... there simply could not be the idea of America without "God" in the picture.

    The above story, might be viewed as a historical documentary just as personal correspondence from Jefferson, Madison, Franklin, etc., are considered.  Even though spiritual in tone, so was the founding of the Constitution and Declaration of Independence.   

Excerpted from the  Declaration of Independence...

    " When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature's God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.

    " We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.--That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, --That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness...."

    Although dismissed by historians, documentation by our founders clearly indicate America was intentionally founded as a Christian nation and was expected to always remain one.  Perhaps this is why the other nations of the world try to defeat America, but is it not it perhaps self evident that  God seems to have other plans.
